I
have always had an appreciation for the intaglio engravings on
currency and stock certificates as well as works by
Albrecht Dürer.
I've
done scratchboards and fine line ink drawings even tattoos but I've
only been doing scrimshaw in May of 2006. I love the details and
working with ivory and wood. My subjects have included animals, landscapes, portraits, figures and of course rendering tasteful nudes
of beautiful women.
I live and work in sunny Tucson, Arizona but grew up south of here in
Sierra Vista where I took art classes at the community college. Most
of my training though has been from reading a lot of books about
drawing and painting plus practice, practice, practice.

This is part my collection of pre-ban elephant ivory
poker chips. Each one is signed and
dated. They are also marked with a
design number and version letter. A chip
marked #31B would be the second chip
I've scribed of design number 31. Some
are custom chips that I won't duplicate.
The subsequent chips are still unique
since it's tough to recreate them exactly
the same every time.
Almost all my chip were hand cut, shaped
and polished from a single elephant tusk I
purchased for these projects. Here's a
step by step demo of the process. |
